My Dear Daughter
Martin and Anna had just started their new buisness a year after marriage. They were in high hopes of excelling in their new career. Everything was going well in their lives until tragedy struck.
It was not a financial struggle, nor was there a downfall in the vocation. It was a baby. A completely unplanned pregnancy was in. Anna's parents decided to take care of the baby girl in fear of abortion. They named the girl Betty.
Betty was raised unlike any other child, but there was only one empty spot in her life no one could fill.
It was the love of her parents.
Her parents would not speak to her. It seemed as though they hated her. Well, it was true as she was completely unplanned. They did not buy her clothes like other children, nor did they spend time with her. They decided to avoid her presence.
Years passed and Betty went to elementary school. Her parents' business began to take root and grew successful. They also had another child. She was named Veronica and they looked forward to take care of her. Anna's parents, however, were not able to see their second granddaughter.
Time flew by and Betty passed out of elementary school. Veronica also grew up. She would often do the wrong thing and blame it on Betty. She got everything she wanted, but her poor sister would not get anything. If Betty asked for something, the parents yelled at her. They vented their anger out on that child.
Once, she was out in the garden, when she saw her sister Veronica along with her parents. The trio was holding hands with Veronica in the centre. They headed out to buy some new clothes for the younger sister. When Betty approached them, they paid no attention and continued their walk to the store. Many a times, she herself had asked them to take her to the shop, but all they said was "You already have too many clothes. Why don't you ever learn to be happy with what you have?"
But this didn’t stop her from loving them. She loved them everyday although they hated her. She believed that one day, they too may return her love.
Betty entered University and worked really hard everyday. Due to her hardwork, she got an offer from the University, along with some of her classmates, to attend a seminar course for a year with free accommodation, since she was the brightest student in class.
She packed up and left the house that never gave any respect to her. Her mom called her one day and said, "Are you coming back, or should I give your room to the maid?" She was completely shocked to see that her parents had not even noticed her leaving. She quietly explained the situation and cut the call.
But she did not give up. She graduated from the University with honour and also managed to get a job along with a decent income.
Veronica, on the other hand, was a very spoiled child. Her parents would spend a lot of money on her education and extra-curricular activities. She also got everything she asked for. Somehow, their business started going downhill, and they were very close to declaring bankruptcy.
That was when realization hits the parents and one day Betty receives a call from her mother. She said, "We really have no money in our house, amd we are close to being bankrupt. Would you please send me some money, my dear daughter?"
Those words were enough to move her completely. She sent them all that she could and also sent some of her savings, hoping that it would help them.
Betty was in touch with her sister on social media. Veronica had posted recent pictures of her mom and her in an expensive restaurant. One was with a new car. And one was her wearing overpriced clothes. She noticed that these pictures were posted soon after she had sent them the money.
A few weeks later, Betty's mom called her once again-
"I am afraid to say this, but we still do need more money. The one which you sent was not enough"
"Sorry mom, but I am not sending you any money this time"
"How could you do this to us? We have spent our entire lives raising you and is this how you repay us?"
With tears in her eyes, Betty snapped the line dead. She knew she was doing the right thing...
